After a record-breaking sales year in 2010, the made-in-America Kia Sorento already has set a new all-time monthly sales record in 2011 and is now looking to attract even more buyers. A key to accomplishing this goal? A notable refresh for the 2012 model year that will add cutting-edge technologies both under the hood and inside the cabin.

In the engine bay, the 2012 Sorento will get an upgrade to its 2.4-liter I4 powerplant via the addition of a gasoline direct injection (GDI) system. GDI increases the engine's efficiency by optimizing the fuel-injection process, resulting in more power without sacrificing fuel economy. Although the automaker hasn't announced detailed specs for the new mill, the same engine makes 200 hp and 186 lb.-ft. of torque in the all-new Kia Optima, while delivering an EPA line of up to 24 mpg city/35 mpg highway.

Also debuting on the '12 Sorento will be Kia's innovative hands-free in-vehicle communications and entertainment system-UVO. Leveraging the power of Microsoft technology, UVO will let drivers answer and place phone calls, send and receive SMS text messages, access music from a variety of different music sources, and create custom music experiences, all while showcasing Microsoft's recent advances in voice-recognition capabilities for ease of use.

Other fresh content that will be available on the new Sorento includes:

  • Available power-folding side mirrors
  • A new five-spoke "hyper-finish" wheel design and updated interior illumination for the Sorento EX
  • A stainless step-pad and numerous interior enhancements, including a new heated, wood-trimmed steering wheel, for the Sorento SX
  • Kia's new "YES-Essentials" anti-soiling, anti-static, anti-bacterial seat treatment
  • Increased availability for the automaker's sonar backup warning system
  • Improved ventilated and cooled seating, with a driver's seat memory function and four-way power-adjustable passenger seat, for the Sorento EX (optional) and SX (standard)

The 2012 Kia Sorento will go on sale later this year.
