Showcasing a 30 percent increase in fuel economy over the previous model, the all-new 2012 Subaru Impreza is expected to set a new benchmark for vehicles in its segment, with EPA ratings of 27 mpg city/36 mpg highway-making it the most fuel-efficient all-wheel-drive car in America.

That big-time performance jump comes courtesy of a new 148-hp 2.0-liter boxer-style engine, which can be mated to either a five-speed manual transmission or Subaru's second-generation Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT), which first debuted on the 2011 Subaru Legacy and Outback. This advanced CVT is more compact and lighter in weight than past units, and it offers a six-speed manual-shift mode with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters for enhanced driver control. The car itself is much lighter as well, with engineers slicing some 150 lbs. off the curb weight of the 2011 model-as a result, the 2012 Impreza feels much more responsive on the road even with its slightly smaller engine.

It's a feeling that's further enhanced by the new Impreza's longer wheelbase and enhanced suspension, which has been strengthened for improvements to the car's ride, straight-line stability, handling, and overall vehicle response. New hydraulic engine mounts have been added as well for reduced levels of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).

And all this comes in a package that will offer both more interior space and more comfort. Despite maintaining its same tidy exterior dimensions, the next-gen Impreza delivers increased hip room, shoulder room, rear leg room, trunk room (on the sedan) and cargo room (on the five-door hatchback), with the hatchback gaining that extra capability in part from 60/40 split rear seats that now fold flat. That roomy cabin is then enhanced by richer-looking appointments with more soft-touch materials and plenty of storage, along with available premium technologies like an uplevel audio system, a new voice-controlled navigation setup with a 6.1-inch touchscreen, heated seats, a power moonroof, bigger alloy wheels and Bluetooth connectivity.

The boldly designed 2012 Subaru Impreza is slated to go on sale this fall.
