The speed limit can be increased in many parts of the city of Montclair in a month's time.

A meeting was held among the council members of the city this month in which the ordinance was approved. An engineering and traffic survey was conducted which decided on the increase of the speed limit on the roads.

The speed limit of around 10000 vehicles was tested in around 128 areas selected for the test. City engineer Mike Hudson said that the time of the test should be selected when the traffic flow is smooth. He further said that taking the test in the mid day time won't be appropriate. The traffic flow is not smooth at this hour of the day when vehicles in the busy streets creep at 25 MPH due to heavy traffic flow.

The second reading of the ordinance will be done on June 6 in the city council meeting. The Montclair municipal law will be updated online and the new law will be implemented into a month's time after the ordinance is passed.

The survey was conducted between the months of September and March.

The speed monitoring and the speed checks by the radar were done by the Montclair Police Department Personnel.

As per the Staff Report, the data collected were calculated and evaluated by the engineering division staff.

The staff report further said that after the results of the speed surveys, the speed limit in many areas of the city is proposed to be raised.

There will be a rise of around 5 MPH in the speed limit in various parts of the city. Hudson said that a survey is yet to be done on the replacement of sign boards. But it is assumed that the signs will be changed at every half a mile.

The cost incurred on the signs will be around $5000 which is expected to be a part of the Public Works 2011-12 budget.
