We first saw the leaked press shots back in September, and today the 2009 MINI Cooper and Cooper S Convertible are now official. The big scoop? An almost 10% hike in the price tag. Why the giant jump? galleryPost('2009MINISVertPExt', 6, '2009 MINI Cooper S Convertible - Exterior'); As we told you way back when , both will make their worldwide debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January. Here's what to expect. Orders for the MINI Convertible are being taken now; the price for the MINI Cooper Convertible is $24,550, a whopping $2,600 more than the 2009 model year. The new MINI Cooper S Convertible gets a similar price bump of $2,050 to $27,450 including the $650 destination and handling charge with the delivery of the first MINI Convertibles to begin on March 28, 2009. The reason being is there's been a huge demand for the little guy. MINI's shown they can sell out of the fuel-sipping go-kart at the current price levels, so why not bump the price by 10%. Especially...

Just as soon as we published our very unofficial " Carpocalypse Now " edition floor map for January's Detroit Auto Show we saw what our sources told us would happen — the Chinese automakers are movin' on up to the main floor . Today comes more bad news for the nation's premiere international auto show that's caused us to update the floor map again below the jump — Honda's decided to forgo a press conference . Honda spokesman Kurt Antonius, says since Honda won't "be doing 'traditional' product unveilings" at Detroit, there was no need to do anything other than drop the Honda Insight concept we've already seen out into the booth and that's about it. No other reasons were given for the move, although we'd hazard a guess it's got something to do with this whole credit crunch thing. Hmm, and conventional wisdom told us that only affected U.S. automakers. Well, guess we've got to update that floor map again....

After years of skirmishing in the basement of the Cobo Center, the Chinese automakers will finally set up a base on the main floor of the upcoming Detroit Auto Show . Why were the two Chinese companies, BYD Auto and Brilliance Auto , honored with the presence among the big boys upstairs? It isn't because they're selling more cars in the US, because they still don't sell any here. The Chinese automakers are benefiting from the mass exodus of automakers from the Detroit show who are bailing to save money during the Carpocalypse . We suspect the organizers thought it would be a nice gesture since China currently holds around $600 billion in US debt. The two companies will get a total of 11,000 square feet vacated by Mitsubishi. Though we hate to see any automaker flee Detroit, there are a few reasons to look forward to a larger Chinese presence. Below is our list of the five best moments of Chinese automakers at the Detroit Auto Show. 5. Travis Exploits The Book Of Songs We have...

With today's news that Nissan's dropping out of both the Detroit Auto Show and the Chicago Auto Show , joining a slew of other automakers fearful of the Carpocalypse , we figured it was a good day to take a look at what the Detroit Auto Show floor may look like come January. Frankly, there's some pretty big holes up there on our map. We don't have the foggiest idea what's going to happen with a few of the big names — specifically Chrysler and GM — and we also don't know what this means for some of the other more "alternative" names — like Changfeng and the rest of the Chinese takeout menu of minor up-and-coming automakers. Take a look and tell us if we're missing anything. We'll update the floor map as we hear more.

This is the first image of the Volvo S60 Concept, set to debut at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show . Volvo is calling the concept a preview of the 2010 Volvo S60. Volvo had better be careful or people will completely forget about the nameplate's stodgy past as the S60 concept is almost beautiful beyond belief. It takes on one of the final remaining traditional Volvo design elements, those normally straight, strong shoulder lines running font to back are reinterpreted in a curvaceous, smooth, sinewy line. The headlights are swept up and back and the roof line at the C-pillar is combined with the line of the trunk lid similar to what we've seen in the latest S40. Obviously the giant wheels and crystalline center stack mentioned won't make it to production and the suicide doors don't really jive with Volvo's safety mantra, but holy damn that's a beautiful car. A high-resolution image is available here and currently available details can be had below. FIRST IMAGE OF THE VOLVO...

Details on the instrument panel and driver assist systems on the new 2010 Honda Insight have been released and it seems Honda is intent on training the new hybrid's drivers in much the same way other auto manufacturers have announced. The "Ecological Drive Assist System" uses a combination of color cues in the speedometer and "leaves which grow" to encourages economical driving behaviors. When you push the "Eco" mode button, the speedo turns green when you're being frugal or blue when you're hooning it, also a panel grows "leaves" to reward short term driving and displays the long term performance as well. This of course comes on the heels of the announcement from Ford about their " Smartgauge with EcoGuide " system in the Fusion Hybrid and Milan Hybrid which also rewards judicious use of the go-pedal with growing leaves. We expect everyone who complained about that system to bellyache about this too. galleryPost('insightdashpreview'...

There are really two kinds of press campaigns surrounding the 2010 Toyota Prius right now, the official ones with silly pictures of knobs and carpet and bolts and the like , then there's the other kind that leaks the whole car and major details, like the one see today. In this set of low-resolution images we see the Prius in profile, the layout of the all-digital dash, the amount of cargo room we can expect, and that the new car will be getting headlight washers — certainly one of those hefty options absolutely necessary for a super efficient hybrid. galleryPost('priusteaseroops', 6, 'Toyota Prius '); It also seems the rumor of asymmetric headlights can be put to bed even though the first set of unofficial images showed such a thing. Oh well, still looks smiley even though it'll no longer be winking at us. It's going to be a long slog to the Detroit Auto Show next January where the Prius is set to be revealed. [ PriusChat ]

Back in August we told you Lexus plans to unveil a new hybrid-only model at the Detroit Auto Show in January at the same time as the reveal of the new third-generation 2010 Toyota Prius . Now, a newly published rendering from Japanese buff book Mag-X may give us some clues of what to expect from a car they claim will be badged as the Lexus HS250h. We'll let Mag-X take it from here: The drawing reveals a well-proportioned four-door car with Prius-like lines and angles—especially the front slope of its windshield and hood—while retaining design cues which are unmistakably Lexus, most notably the back-end and taillight styling. The publication says the Lexus HS250h will most likely be outfitted with the 2.4-liter engine and electric motor combo found in the Toyota Camry Hybrid, and share many of the same mechanicals as that car. This includes the current-generation nickel metal hydride battery. Carrying over the powertrain would be significantly more cost-effective than developing an entirely...

We're just 60 days from the reveal of the 2010 Toyota Prius at the Detroit Auto Show , meaning it's time for the automaker to launch a micro-site with an annoying countdown clock. What makes it more annoying is photos of the New Prius have already leaked. So yeah, the countdown clock? Sort of unnecessary at this point. But, if you're suddenly unable to determine the number of days from now until the Detroit Auto Show this may be a helpful tool. Although we kind of expect that isn't so much an issue with Jalopnik readers. galleryPost('toyotaprius10', 3, 'Wonder What It Will Look Like'); [ 2010 Toyota Prius Microsite ]

Nissan just released this blurry sketch of a new commercial van concept sized somewhere between a Ford Transit Connect and a Dodge Sprinter and officially set to see an unveil at the Detroit Auto Show in January. Nissan also tells us to expect a production model to go on sale here in the US some time around 2010. We love big panel vans like this, they’re possibly the most practical work vehicles around and this one, with Nissan Cube -like styling is particularly appealing. Lets just hope they offer it with a diesel and a manual transmission. The full release follows the jump and click here for a high-resolution shot of the concept. Nissan NV2500 Concept Set For Debut Nissan North America, Inc. today announced its Nissan NV2500 Concept, which makes its public debut in early January at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. One of the largest concepts vehicle ever created by Nissan, the innovative NV2500 Concept previews the company's entry into the North American...

The debut of the mid-engined Volkswagen Roadster — with design based on the above shot of the Volkswagen Concept R — was reportedly planned for the LA Auto Show later this month. Automotive News is reporting it's skipping out on fun in sunny So-Cal and it's now heading straight for the Detroit Auto Show early next year. A spokesman for VW claims it's to attract more attention to the debut of the vehicle, which is likely to see production as early as 2011. This makes perfect sense because when we think of convertibles, we think Detroit in the middle of winter. A brief rundown of what we think we know about the Roadster below the jump. Following on the heels of the Volkswagen Concept R , the mid-engined Roadster should be set to compete with cars like the Lotus Elise and Porsche Boxster but at a lower cost. The appearance is said to be borrowed from the Scirocco while engine choices will likely include a small diesel option and a turbocharged, direct-injection gas...

Intrepid reader and impromptu spy photographer Sean sent us these images of a camo-covered 2010 Toyota Prius hamming it up with a 2009 Toyota Venza on California's 405 freeway outside of Long Beach. This tag team of dynamic excitement is pounding the pavement of the 90801 ahead of the Detroit Auto Show premier of the Prius. Keep in mind, we've already seen complete pictures of the new Prius , and ToMoCo has been pummeling us with coma-inducing teaser shots , so these are really just a study in purpose-free camouflage. galleryPost('ToyotaPriusSpy10', 6, 'Five Dollars Says The Prius Across The Freeway Flashed Its Lights'); galleryPost('ToyotaVenza405', 3, 'VenZzzzzzZzzzzzzzzzzzzZZzzzzzzzzzza');

Toyota continues to stick with its strategy of slowly releasing tiny teasers of the 2010 Toyota Prius through the good folks at PriusChat despite the fact that we've seen the full car . But whereas the previous teasers left us with questions, this latest photo answers a question Prius owners have had since the first model rolled off the assembly line: What the hell is up with the seats? Prius seats have until now lacked proper adjustments, something a technologically forward-leaning car like the Prius should be expected to have. We'll be sure to sit in them at the Detroit Auto Show in January and tell you what we think. (Thanks to Danny at PriusChat for grabbing this) galleryPost('priusteasers', 4, 'Teased Like A Prom Night Hairdo');galleryPost('toyotaprius10', 3, 'Zoom Back A Bit');[ PriusChat ]
