With GM hotshoe Jan Magnussen in the cockpit of Zee Really fast One , the General's hypercar trimmed a staggering four seconds off its previous record-breaking lap time, bringing in a 7:22.4 lap around the 13-mile circuit. Although blisteringly quick, the ZR1's new time still falls short of the Viper ACR's best time of 7:22.1. We don't expect this glorious arms race to end anytime soon — not that we'd ever want these warriors of the raceway to quit duking it out. Guess it depends on whomever ends up owning the Viper brand . galleryPost('ZR1reviewtrack', 6, 'Corvette ZR1 On the Track'); [ MotorGears ]

Legend has it the "Jake" logo, which acts as the badge of badass for the Corvette C6.R racing teams, was born when someone scribbled a skull in the dust surrounding the Corvette badge on the side of the team's transport semi. Others source it as a scribble on a napkin in some far flung dive bar after a victorious race. Wherever it came from, it's become the officially unofficial brand of Corvette Racing and instead of being hidden away on the car as is the norm, the C6.Rs sported a new, Jake-centric paint job for last weekend's Laguna Seca race (Corvette Racing's Olivier Beretta and Oliver Gavin won in GT1 by the way). The logo was proudly displayed right over the induction cowl in a design that came directly from GM styling. Jake's appearance has become something of a tradition as last year the logo was large and in charge on the hood as well. This year's design sure is pretty, but last year was definitely badass, which leads us to the inevitable question...

Here's a whopper of a story if it ends up being true: Autoweek is reporting General Motors has placed the next-generation C7 Corvette program on indefinite hold due to the company's shaky financial situation. Sources within GM are saying the program has been shelved for now with no specific timetable for release. This is not to say the 'Vette is dead, only that GM's management has no clearly defined direction for the car. With the pressure from 2020 CAFE requirements and with coffers running dry, there are other more important programs to tend to. Autoweek goes on to look into their crystal ball and imagine a time when the C7 will actually bow as early as 2014 — yikes. Unfortunately, this doesn't sound terribly far-fetched to us. Considering the madness happening in Detroit these days, this kind of thing has to be expected, but these kinds of rumors always come as a shock. We love the current Corvette, but that's a long time to wait for the next iteration....

Yesterday evening we saw the Specter Werkes C6 Corvette GTR make its public debut here at Cauley Ferrari in West Bloomfield, MI. It's rare to have the chance to cover a car from its earliest concept sketches , through the build process and all the way until its public unveiling. But yesterday evening we completed that cycle with the Specter Werkes' special Corvette. The GTR shares only the roof, rear hatch and glass with the exterior of the 2008 Chevy Corvette Z06 upon which it is based and has a footprint widened by four-and-a-half inches. The overall design effect is one of taking the C6 Corvette, mixing it with a touch of Viper RT/10, and adding a liberal dash of kick-in-the-pants. galleryPost('spectergtrunveil', 9, 'Specter Werkes C6 Corvette GTR Unveil'); After the nine-foot-tall leggy models pulled the wraps off the GTR, buyer number one Rollie Purifoy pulled the car into the crush of an enthusiastic crowd, giving us an opportunity to spend a couple of minutes...

This jet black Corvette was spotted outside China's National Department for Automobile Quality, the agency in charge of awarding sales licenses to automakers. Our guess is this can only mean one thing — GM is planning to sell its golden child in China. The only problem is "Chevy" in China is like "Daewoo" in the US, a purveyor of bargain basement appliances. No problem! GM will just do with the 'Vette what it's done elsewhere across the globe — sell the Corvette as a stand-alone brand. Then you don't need to worry about your high horsepower mixing with your 'merican Revolution. Frankly, China's had enough of those as it is. [ ChinaCarTimes ]

Now that the 2009 Corvette ZR1 has set a lap time of 7:26.4 , we've been trying to wrap our heads around just how fast that really is. Sure, it's faster than the GT-R , but we're wondering if there's anything that can make the ZR1 look slow. With the caveat that lap times vary depending on track conditions and driver skill, let's take a look at some of the fastest lap times around the the Nürburgring Nordschleife, and see what's what. 7:29.03 - Nissan R35 GT-R The calling card of the new Nissan GT-R is technology witchcraft. On paper, you wouldn't expect much from a 3800lb car with a V6. But on the track, the grip of the trick AWD system channeling 480 HP from the twin-turbocharged engine is pure magic. 7:26.40 - Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 The instant legend. Keep in mind, there was reportedly a strong headwind on the main straight, which could have actually slowed things down a bit. Could the ZR1 possibly set an even faster time in the future? 6:55 - Radical SR8...

We caught the rebodied and power massaged Karvajal Designs ZX-1 C6 Corvette downstairs a bit ago andare still mulling over the changes. The widebody stance appeals to our inner 17-year-old, but the hastily styled vents make us want to hate them. The rear end is where the bulk of the changes happen, and we see styling borrowed from the Porsche Carrera GT where once there was a back window. The rump gets stealthy hidden tail lights a modest reshaping. Under the hood there's an Eaton supercharger pushing 10 psi of wind into the 6.0L V8, which delivers 560 HP and 529 lb.ft. of torque as a result. We wouldn't blame someone for wanting three 2009 Corvette ZR-1's , as the supercharged V8-powered promises to be the fastest Corvette ever. We guess we can't blame him for selling the other two because, you know, what are you going to do with three of them? But call us old fashioned, because we think charging $350,000 a piece is somewhat uncool. There's no final official price for the car, but a tax slip from the Big BJ Vette Auction let slip that it may only be $99,000. Will the market bear a price 3.5 times the sale price? Probably. So after all that high end craftsmanship and attention to detail, we're assuming you need the equivalent of a unicorn chaser . We thought what better to rid you of the perfection of the main show floor and the primed and polished perfection of the Great 8 than with the 1986 ViperVette. That's right, it's the guts of a 1986 C3 Corvette with the approximate body of a first gen RT/10 Dodge Viper overlaid. Take a wild guess at how we picked it out. galleryPost('vetteper', 6, 'Title'); vetteper 6 The first clue are those wheels, they stick out like an oh so sore thumb. Actually, half the problem is they don't stick out at all, they're practically lost in those wheel wells. Second and perhaps most impressive is the virtually intact digital dashboard so missed in modern vehicles. We almost thought that interior was certifiable there for a moment. We could go on and on about the specatacularness of the conversion, but we think we'll let the car speak for...

Sure, it may be blanketing snow in the Northeast and getting ready to do so in parts of the Midwest, but it's never too early to start thinking about summer. One essential part of the sunshine season is the barbecue and one unfortunate casualty of the barbecue happens to be the back end of a Chevy Corvette . galleryPost('bbqvette', 3, 'BBQ Vette'); The BBQ Vette is a hand-crafted grill made out of the tail end of a Corvette. Each one is custom-built to the specs of the purchaser. The grill is chock full of welded 14-gauge steel construction, fiberglass, polished aluminum diamond plating and more. The craftsman will match colors to VIN numbers, and the taillights even work. The charcoal version of the grill will set you back $1,795, while the propane model goes for $2,195.
