  • Pre-Owned BMW Ads Now Completely Indiscernible From Syphilis PSAs [Ad Watch]

What It's Selling : Pre-owned Bimmers Where It's At : Greece What This Ad Literally Says : "You know you're not the first" What This Ad Intends To Say : Would you say no to a sexy looking woman just because she's not a virgin? Probably not unless you're one of those "religious types." Therefore, BMW hopes you'd respond similarly when given the offer of a great car someone's driven before. What This Ad Suggests : A used Bimmer is a hot woman who looks sort of like Sienna Miller . Jalopnik Snap Judgment : This pervy POV shot looks exactly like the STD ads they're putting in the men's rooms at bars. Change the little BMW logo to "Get Tested" and it works just as well. However, the ad's also pretty good at getting the point across — used Bimmers are cheaper than new ones. Also, they can give you Syphilis. [ Ads Of The World via CopyRanter ]
  • EXCLUSIVE: "The Ramp", A Documentary by Jeff Schultz [Ad Watch]

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/comedy/EXCLUSIVE_BMW_Launches_1_Series_from_Germany_to_San_Fran'; "There's a fine line between genius, and insanity — and a hair brained scheme, and a revolutionary idea." posits this film, and we agree. As a result of our early discovery of the 2009 BMW 1-Series themed Rampenfest viral marketing campaign, we have been offered the exclusive rights to bring you the world wide documentary premier of "The Ramp". The thirty minute movie chronicles the men, the mission, and the madness of an attempt to launch the 1-series from Germany to America by way of ramp. And before you get to thinking, "Bah, that's not too hard," the attempt is not designed to simply go from the imaginary town of Oberpfaffelbachen, Germany to say, New York City. No, the car's intended target is San Francisco . So grab some popcorn and a comfy chair, sit back, and enjoy the frigtening naivete of physics terrifying Deutsche chompers...
  • Pontiac G8 GT Slams BMW 5-Series In Poetic Verse [Ad Watch]

newVideoPlayer("Pontiac_v_BMW.flv", 463, 387,""); From the book of car, whatever that is, comes the latest in the march of ads for the Pontiac G8 GT . We all thought the Spy Hunter commercial was clever, and the Hot Wheels one was slick too. This new web-only commercial turns it up a notch, taking the fight right to the lion's den, comparing the new 2008 Pontiac G8 GT to the BMW 5-Series. Hmm, that's an interesting approach from the brand that never used to drive excitement, especially when they claimed they were , but since it's their ad, do we really have to say who comes out ahead in this one? What we really like about this latest commercial is the poetry slam vs. powerpoint presentation style, plus the funny pictures of goats. Subtle allusion to the Pontiacs of the past, perhaps, but automakers should remember that farm animals always make for a good direction for a car commercial. At least in our minds. [ Youtube ]
  • "The Ramp" Trailer Online, Documentary Film Of 2009 BMW 1-Series "Launch" [Ad Watch]

We first dropped news of what seems to be the viral ad campaign for the 2009 BMW 1-Series called "Rampenfest" a couple of weeks ago, but now there's an update on the progress of things. We received an email from "Jeff Schultz," the apparent documentarian, congratulating us on being the first to discover the project and informing us there's a poster in our future for the effort. We smell direct marketing, but what the hey, maybe we can give away a poster. Anyway, the trailer for the film is over at the Rampenfest, and it's ripe with German stereotypes, bizarrely large teeth, and a ginormous ramp in the fake town of Oberpfaffelbachen.
  • Rampenfest To Launch BMW 1-Series From Oberpfaffelbachen [Ad Watch]

newVideoPlayer("rampfelen.flv", 463, 387,""); Taking a page out of its MINI playbook, BMW appears to be setting up some very clever guerrilla marketing to promote the 2009 BMW 1-series . Rather than shovel another recycled "look at the amazing precision of this new car" advertising campaign at us, BMW may be going in a different direction for the tossable new sports coupe and convertible. The story of this "viral" advertising begins with the video you see above, and we've done enough digging to figure out where it may be leading. Hit the jump to find out. galleryPost('rampenfest', 3, 'A Giant Fake Ramp Built in German Fake Place');galleryPost('bmw1seriesexterior', 3, 'BMW 1-Series Convertible'); The video is supposedly the work of an American videographer named Jeff Schultz. Jeff's Youtube account is suspiciously centered around this odd 454 meter tall ramp he happened to find in the a Bavarian hamlet named...
  • Ad Watch: The BMW 3-Series Is A Cult On Wheels, Makes For A Good Commercial

newVideoPlayer("BMW3SeriesAd_gawker.flv", 475, 376); Yes, the BMW 3-Series is a religion to many -- a part of pop culture, a subculture. Heck, it's like Joseph Stalin or Kennedy -- it's a cult of personality. And it also makes for a killer car commercial. In a world of watered-down attempts at humor and silly jingles -- this 3-Series commercial stands out. It's an ad that's does what ads about cars with a history should be doing -- drawing upon that history and the positive emotions associated with it to use to sell the present day car by showing us the new version of the ride with a clear white background -- a lack-of-color representing the endless possibilities of the future. Don't get us wrong, it's no Ferrari Shell ad, and it's no Michael Bay Chevy ad -- but it does succeed where many recent commercials have failed -- it made our pulses quicken and lean forward to pay closer attention.
